TVS stands for T. V. Sundaram Iyengar, who founded the company in 1911 as a transportation business with a large fleet of trucks and buses under the name of Southern Roadways. In 1962, he established Sundaram Clayton, a company that manufactured brakes, exhausts, compressors and various other automotive parts.

In 1976, the company set up a plant at Hosur in Tamil Nadu to manufacture mopeds as part of their new division. In 1980, TVS 50, India’s first two-seater moped rolled out of the factory at Hosur. In 1987, the company entered into a technical collaboration with Suzuki Motor Corporation to produce motorcycles for the Indian market. The joint venture was called TVS-Suzuki and it launched several models such as the Suzuki Supra, Suzuki Samurai, Suzuki Shogun and Suzuki Shaolin.

In 2001, the company parted ways with Suzuki and renamed itself TVS Motor Company. Since then, the company has become one of the leading two-wheeler manufacturers in India and has expanded its presence to over 60 countries. The company also acquired Norton Motorcycle Company, a British motorcycle brand, in 2020. Some of the popular products of TVS Motor Company are TVS Apache, TVS Jupiter, TVS Scooty, TVS Ntorq and TVS XL.
