The X440 boasts a well-designed dashboard that strikes a balance between classic aesthetics and modern functionality. The Digi-analogue instruments provide a visually appealing blend of traditional charm and the necessary information expected from a motorcycle in 2023. 

However, it is worth noting that the small digital tachometer can be challenging to read with precision. Despite this minor drawback, the overall dashboard layout offers an optimal combination of style and practicality.

Compromises and Features

While the X440 may not include Bluetooth connectivity or adjustable levers, it is important to acknowledge that certain compromises are necessary to achieve such an impressive price point. 

These omissions are among the more easily accepted areas where costs can be trimmed without significantly impacting the overall riding experience. It is evident that Hero has strategically made trade-offs to ensure affordability without compromising core functionalities.

Standard TFT Console and Connectivity Options

The X440 features a single-pod TFT console as standard across the entire range, providing a modern and vibrant display. While the base model offers standard connectivity options, the top model takes it a step further by incorporating additional connectivity features. This inclusion demonstrates Hero's commitment to staying up-to-date with evolving technological advancements.

Advanced Headlamp with Intelligent Functionality

The X440 is equipped with a full LED headlamp that not only enhances visibility but also demonstrates impressive power output. One standout feature is the presence of a light sensor, which automatically activates the main beam when ambient light levels decrease. This innovation sets a new standard for motorcycles in this price range, further accentuating the X440's value proposition.

The Harley-Davidson X440 features a newly designed tubular steel perimeter frame, built to withstand the challenges of Indian roads according to Hero's claims. Complementing the frame is a robust 43mm USD (upside-down) front fork, a first in this segment, and preload-adjustable dual rear shocks. 

Despite incorporating mostly metal panels, including the fenders, Hero has successfully managed to keep the curb weight at a reasonable 190.5kg (the base spoked wheel variant is slightly heavier). 

As a result, the X440 is around four kilograms lighter than the Classic 350, and this weight reduction becomes apparent as soon as the bike is set in motion.

Handling and Stability

At low speeds, the X440 exhibits a delightful lightness and ease of manoeuvring, making it surprisingly effortless to ride. Despite its nimble nature, the bike maintains a steadfast sense of stability, never displaying unpredictable behaviour. 

In fact, the X440 strikes a fine balance between agility and planted stability, resulting in an enjoyable riding experience, even when tackling corners. 

The bike encourages spirited riding and quickly encourages riders to explore their limits, although the footpegs may scrape slightly earlier than expected. While scraping the pegs on a Classic 350 requires more effort, the Harley offers superior stability at such lean angles.

Braking Performance and Tyres

Equipped with a substantial 320mm front disc and standard dual-channel ABS, the X440 offers low-effort braking performance that suits the bike's dynamics exceptionally well. The motorcycle rides on specially developed MRF Zapper Hyke tyres, which not only boast a retro aesthetic but also provide convincing performance on the road. 

While the X440's performance on rough roads requires further evaluation, initial impressions from the pristine surfaces at Hero's CIT suggest that the suspension setup offers plush and absorbent characteristics.

Seating Position and Ergonomics

The X440 excels in providing a well-judged seating position that strikes a balance between comfort and control. Riders standing at six feet tall will find themselves comfortably accommodated, while even those at a height of 5'6" can manage the 805mm seat height, albeit with slight tiptoeing. The ergonomics are thoughtfully designed to ensure a commanding riding position without sacrificing rider comfort.

Engineering Excellence and Pricing Surprise

It is no surprise that the X440 showcases exceptional engineering, considering the talented team of engineers and specialists assembled at Hero's CIT. Noteworthy among them is David Lopez Cordoba, the head of Vehicle Engineering, whose impressive resume includes work on iconic motorcycles like the Triumph Daytona. However, what pleasantly surprises me is the X440's price point, offering a compelling package of engineering excellence at an affordable cost.
