The Nissan X-Trail stands out as a true representation of Nissan's SUV design language. At the front, its striking V Motion grille with chrome detailing, angular split headlamps, and a floating roof effect immediately catch attention.

The design integrates clever aero elements such as air curtains below the headlamps and active grille shutters that open only when cooling is needed. Along the sides, bold shoulder lines and 20-inch alloy wheels—the largest in its class—emphasise its robust stance.

The rear features a tailgate with the number plate positioned centrally and a chunky faux skid plate at the bottom, lending the X-Trail a rugged appeal.

Measuring 4,680mm in length, 1,840mm in width, and 1,725mm in height, the X-Trail’s dimensions make it slightly taller than the Skoda Kodiaq, while maintaining a sleek, aerodynamic look.

The X-Trail is available in three classic colors: Diamond Black, Champagne Silver, and Pearl White.

The Nissan X-Trail is powered by a 163hp, 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder turbo-petrol engine equipped with mild-hybrid technology and an innovative variable compression turbo system. This high-tech powertrain offers 300 Nm of torque, driving the front wheels via a shift-by-wire CVT automatic gearbox.

Despite its modest size and lack of 4WD, the engine delivers a smooth, refined performance, excelling with minimal vibrations. Power delivery is consistent and responsive, particularly at part-throttle, while three drive modes—Eco, Normal, and Sport—adapt the throttle and gearbox responses to match driving needs.

The variable compression engine adjusts to provide either better fuel efficiency or stronger performance as needed. Nissan claims a fuel efficiency of 13.6kpl, and it has been seen in some test drive reviews where it gives a mileage of 12.5kmpl. The CVT gearbox impresses with its DCT-like gear shifts under acceleration and provides smooth handling in daily driving scenarios.

Inside, the X-Trail offers a practical yet elegant design. The dashboard, while understated, incorporates premium materials such as leatherette and gloss-black trims that exude quality.

The 8.0-inch touchscreen, though smaller than expected, is complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, providing essential vehicle data. Other notable features include a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 360-degree camera.

However, the X-Trail falls short in certain premium areas, missing features like leather upholstery, powered seats, a larger touchscreen, and ADAS functionalities—many of which are standard in international models. Storage is generous throughout the cabin, and the third-row seating adds extra versatility.

While the front seats are plush and supportive, the third-row seats are better suited for children due to limited space and accessibility. With the third row folded down, the cargo space expands to a massive 1,424 litres, making the X-Trail highly practical for long trips or heavy luggage.

The Nissan X-Trail comes with a robust safety kit, featuring 7 airbags, hill-start assist, traction control, front and rear parking sensors, and a limited-slip differential.

The absence of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as lane-keeping assist or adaptive cruise control is notable, but the vehicle's basic safety features cover the essentials for everyday driving.

Comfort is a priority with a suspension that absorbs most bumps well, although the ride can feel a bit firm at low speeds. The second-row passengers enjoy ample space and a reclining function, though taller passengers might find under-thigh support lacking. Despite some comfort trade-offs in the third row, the X-Trail’s roomy cabin offers good ergonomics overall.

Surprisingly, despite riding on large 20-inch wheels, the Nissan X-Trail offers a smooth and composed ride, absorbing most bumps with ease. At lower speeds, the ride can feel slightly firm, but it becomes more settled as the pace increases, particularly on highways.

The handling is predictable, with a fair amount of body roll in corners but good grip thanks to its 255-section Michelin Primacy tyres. The light steering, while lacking feedback, is responsive enough for confident cornering, and the brakes provide solid stopping power.

Although not particularly sporty, the X-Trail’s ride quality and handling strike a balance between comfort and control, making it a practical SUV for both city and highway driving.
