Maruti, Hyundai, Tata & other automotive firms have revealed their sales figures for January 2023. Let's see who was at the top in terms of sales in India.

As the first month of the new calendar year 2023 comes to a close, automobile manufacturers in India have begun reporting January 2023 sales figures.

While some are still suffering as a result of the global supply chain crisis, most automakers have recorded a double-digit increase in volume. And here's a quick rundown of how India's premier automakers have fared in January 2023.

Maruti Suzuki

In January 2023, the country's top automaker recorded total sales of 172,535 units, an 11.7 percent increase year on year.

While domestic sales increased by 14% year on year to 155,142 units, exports decreased by 3% to 17,393 units.

Maruti's subcompact car sector, which includes the Alto, Baleno, Swift, Dzire, and others, accounted for 99,286 vehicles, a 10% increase year on year. At the same time, sales of the Ciaz subcompact sedan fell by 40% to 1,000 units.

Maruti Suzuki also sold 35,353 utility vehicles (SUVs, MUVs) such as the Brezza, XL6, and Grand Vitara in January 2023, a 33% decrease, while the Eeco van witnessed an 11% increase in sales at 11,709 units.

Maruti Suzuki also sold 4,019 Super Carry LCVs.

Hyundai India

Hyundai Motor India's overall sales last month were 62,276 units, representing a 16.6 percent year-on-year increase from the 53,427 vehicles sold in January 2022.

Domestic sales increased by about 14% to 50,106 units, while exports increased by more than 29% to 12,170 units. In January 2023, sales of the company's SUVs - Tucson, Creta, Venue, Alcazar, and Kona Electric - totaled 27,532 units.

Tata Motors

Tata Motors, on the other hand, sold 48,289 passenger vehicles in January 2023, an 18% increase over the same month last year.

Domestic PV sales (including electric cars) increased by 18% to 47,987 units, while exports increased by 83% to 302 units.

Tata Motors total commercial vehicle sales in January 2023 were 32,780, a 7% decrease from the 35,268 CVs sold in January 2022.

Overall sales for the firm were 81,069 automobiles, up from 76,210 units in January 2022, representing a 6.3% increase.

Mahindra & Mahindra

Mahindra sold 33,040 passenger vehicles in January 2023, a 65 percent increase over the same month last year. Last month, the automotive giant sold 32,915 utility vehicles (SUVs and MPVs), an increase of 66%, while sales of cars and vans (including EVs) increased by 8% to 125 units.

In January 2023, Mahindra's total exports (including CVs) were 3,009 units, representing a 5% YoY increase over the 2,865 cars exported in the same month in 2022.

Honda Cars

Honda Cars India reported monthly domestic sales of 7,821 units in January 2023, a 25% decrease year on year from the 10,427 vehicles sold in the same month in 2022.

Honda also shipped 1,434 cars from India this month, a 17% decrease from the 1,722 vehicles delivered in January 2022.

MG Motors India

MG Motor India was the only one of these automakers to have a drop in January 2023.

MG sold 4,114 automobiles in India last month, a 4.45 percent decrease from the 4,306 vehicles delivered in January 2022. At the same time, MG had a month-on-month increase of more than 5.5% compared to the 3,899 vehicles sold in December 2022.

According to the firm, there has been some improvement in the supply chain, which has helped recoup production momentum; nevertheless, some manufacturer variants remain impacted.

Toyota

Toyota revealed sales figures for the first month of the 2023 calendar year, which increased by 175% over January 2022.

In January 2023, the automaker recorded sales of 12,835 units, up from 7,328 units sold in the same month the previous year. Numbers were also higher compared to December 2022, with the automaker claiming a 23% or 2,414-unit month-on-month increase.

The solid start to 2023 follows a fantastic run in calendar year 2022, when the firm saw its highest statistics in a decade. In total, the automaker sold 1,60,352 vehicles last year.
