Volvo Cars is making progress on its electric-car journey as the Swedish automaker will debut the Volvo EX90 Recharge, its next electric SUV, on November 9, 2022. The Volvo EX90 Recharge electric SUV, which the firm claims to be the safest vehicle it has ever produced, will be an all-electric version of the Volvo XC90, its current flagship SUV. This suggests that the Volvo EX90 Recharge electric SUV, which will act as the brand's flagship vehicle, will ideally have a bigger design than the XC90. By 2030, Volvo wants to be a totally electric brand.
“We’ll continue to innovate until cars don’t crash anymore until we’re 100 per cent carbon-free as a company. All to protect more lives, in line with our purpose. The EX90 is the start of a new era for Volvo Cars, taking our legacy of safety, quality, and innovation into the future", said Jim Rowan, CEO, Volvo Cars.
Volvo will also introduce its newest LiDAR technology with the EX90 Recharge electric SUV, making it one of the most sophisticated sensor sets on the market with its 8 cameras, 5 radars, and 16 ultrasonic sensors. All next Volvo vehicles will ultimately include this unique function. The Geely-owned Scandinavian automaker claims that, while driving at highway speeds, its LiDAR system can identify pedestrians up to 250 m away and anything as little and dark as a tyre on a black road 120 m ahead. The new technology, which was created in-house, will serve as the computer system at the heart of the vehicle, monitoring possible dangers.
Joachim de Verdier, Head of Safe Vehicle Automation at Volvo Cars said, “We believe the EX90 to be the safest Volvo car to ever hit the road. We are fusing our understanding of the outside environment with our more detailed understanding of driver attention. When all our safety systems, sensors, software, and computing power come together, they create a preventative shield of safety around you – and you won’t even know it’s there until you need it.”
With the next Volvo EX90 electric SUV, Volvo will improve the capability of its Advanced Driver-Assistance System (ADAS) in addition to the LiDAR technology. Additionally, a unique collection of sensors and cameras will be put within the vehicle to monitor the driver's eye gaze focus and inform them when it is essential. If the motorist does fall asleep while driving, the system will first gently nudge them and then, if necessary, become more persistent. If such an occasion occurs, the system has the ability to pause and request assistance.
