In a major development, Tesla, the world's leading electric vehicle manufacturer, is set to make its long-anticipated entry into the Indian market. Reports suggest that the announcement could be made during the 10th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit scheduled for January 2024 in Gandhinagar. Tesla's CEO and founder, Elon Musk, is expected to make a significant appearance at the summit to unveil the company's plans for India.
Tesla had previously indicated a reconsideration of its investment plans in India, primarily due to concerns over high import duties on electric cars. However, recent developments, including the discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Elon Musk during the PM's visit to the United States, seem to have paved the way for a positive shift in Tesla's stance. Union Minister Piyush Goyal's visit to a Tesla facility in the US further fueled the speculations about the company's renewed interest in the Indian market.
According to reports from Gujarat Samachar and other local media outlets, Tesla is in the final stages of negotiations with the Indian government for land to set up its manufacturing facility. The city of Sanand in Gujarat is emerging as the top contender for this crucial investment. Notably, Sanand is already home to major automakers like Tata Motors, and the state of Gujarat hosts renowned Indian car manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki and MG Motor.
Insiders suggest that Tesla is likely to formalize its entry into India by signing a Memorandum of Understanding at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. The company has expressed its interest not only in manufacturing electric cars but also in establishing a battery manufacturing plant in the country. The location for Tesla's manufacturing plant in India is expected to be finalized by the end of this year.
Gujarat's attractiveness to Tesla goes beyond just available land. Reports indicate that the state's proximity to ports, such as the Kandla-Mundra port, could facilitate the export of Tesla's electric vehicles to other countries. Although Sanand has been prominently mentioned as a potential location, other options like Becharaji and Dholera have also been reportedly offered by the state government.
Despite not currently selling its electric cars in India due to import duties, Elon Musk acknowledges the nation's strong potential for electric vehicles and battery technology. Globally acclaimed Tesla models, including the Model 3, Model S, Model Y, and Model X, could soon become a common sight on Indian roads.
