From Contessa to Maruti 800, here are some of the lost gems in Indian automotive history.
India has a rich automotive history and has been home to several iconic cars that have left a lasting impact on the Indian automobile industry.
However, many of these beloved cars have been discontinued due to changing market trends, technological advancements, and changing consumer preferences. In this article, we'll take a look at 7 of the most iconic cars in India that are no longer in production.
Hindustan Ambassador

Launched in 1958, the Hindustan Ambassador was the first Indian car and remained in production until 2014. Known for its classic design, robust build quality, and spacious interior, the Ambassador was a staple of Indian roads for over five decades.
Premier Padmini
Produced from 1964 to 2000, the Premier Padmini was one of the first Indian-made cars and was widely popular in the country. With its compact size, low running costs, and easy maintenance, the Padmini was a popular choice among Indian families.
Maruti 800
Launched in 1983, the Maruti 800 was the first Indian car to be manufactured with significant inputs from a foreign company (Suzuki). It was a game changer in the Indian automobile industry, offering customers a modern, fuel-efficient car at an affordable price. The Maruti 800 was discontinued in 2014.
Tata Sierra
Launched in 1991, the Tata Sierra was one of the first sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in India. With its bold design, spacious interior, and high ground clearance, the Sierra was well-suited for Indian roads and was a popular choice among Indian consumers. The Tata Sierra was discontinued in 2000.
Maruti Gypsy
Let's discuss the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy, another well-known SUV! Everyone from the military (for patrolling) to off-roading aficionados relied on this small man. It was equipped for everything thanks to its lightweight 44 design and high- and low-gear ratio.
Sadly, production of the Gypsy was halted for civilian use in 2018, but it is still in use by the military. Yes, the Gypsy won't be returning. But the Jimny, its spiritual descendant, is on the way.
Hindustan Motors Contessa
Launched in 1984, the Hindustan Motors Contessa was one of the first luxury cars in India. With its classic design, spacious interior, and powerful engine, the Contessa was a popular choice among Indian consumers. The Contessa was discontinued in 2002.
Suzuki Zen
With its G10B engine, the Suzuki Zen was a hot hatch that didn't hold back. Racing enthusiasts loved upgrading it to produce over 100 PS extra power. The vehicle handled like a go-kart was really responsive, and was a delight to drive. Unfortunately, the Estilo took its place, but the original Zen will always be known for its sense of humour.
In conclusion, these iconic cars have played an important role in shaping the Indian automobile industry and have left a lasting impact on the country. Although they are no longer in production, they will always be remembered as a part of India's rich automotive heritage.
