► All passengers, whether in the front or back seats, must use a seatbelt.

► The notice advises owners of vehicles lacking seatbelts to install them.

► In Mumbai, a seatbelt violation carries a Rs. 1,000 fine.

From November 1, 2022, the driver and passengers in all four-wheelers must wear seatbelts, according to the Mumbai Police. This means that all people on the four-front wheelers and back seats will be obliged to wear a seatbelt, and failure to do so will be a serious offense. Owners of vehicles that do not have seatbelts must have them installed by the deadline, according to the notification. In Mumbai, the fine for not wearing a seatbelt is Rs. 1,000.

"As per the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, under section 194 (b) (1) Whoever drives a motor vehicle without wearing a safety belt or carries passengers not wearing seat belts shall be punishable. Accordingly, to install seat belt facility in Motor vehicles that do not have seat belt facility for all Commuters, The period is being given till date O1/11/2022", read the notification issued by Mumbai Police.

The release further added, "Therefore, All motor vehicle drivers and all commuters in vehicles, whoever travels on the roads of Mumbai City are hereby informed that it will be mandatory for drivers and all passengers to wear seat belts while traveling from 01/1 1/2022. Otherwise, action will be taken under Section 194 (B) (1) of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019."

While wearing a seatbelt in a car has always been required by the Motor Vehicles Act, the implementation is now being taken more seriously in the aftermath of corporate leader Cyrus Mistry's tragic death. The Shapoorji Pallonji Group scion and former Tata Group Chairman died in an automobile accident on the outskirts of Mumbai on September 4, 2022. An investigation revealed that the businessman was not wearing a seatbelt in the back seat, which could have saved his life.
