The champion cricketer MS Dhoni’s newest Yamaha bike is loaded with an entire range of aftermarket motorcycle performance components.
Legendary former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's love of motorcycles is well known. The cricketer’s vehicle collection ranges from retro styled motorcycles, vintage roadster bikes to modern supercars, that makes it one of the most coveted private garages in India.
The retired international sportsman especially loves to own old-school iconic two-wheelers such as the restored Yamaha RX100 and RD350 classic bikes. Even though he already owns a few RD Yamahas, Mr Dhoni has now included a restored custom RD350 LC bike to his two-wheeler collection.
Modified and restored by Blue Smoke Customs of Chandigarh, this bike retains its original aesthetic design finished in a striking yellow colour in line with Mr Captain Cool's trademark famous number on his cricket jersey. The custom RD350 bike's circular headlights, turn signals, rectangular tail light and dark finished engine are still intact.
The RD350 LC has a different fuel tank than the standard Yamaha RD350, along with triangular side panels and a sportier seat with a sloping rear. Most of the custom work done on MS Dhoni's bike is mechanical as this RD350 Liquid Cooled version has a wide range of aftermarket performance parts. These include a liquid cooled engine, Lectron carburetor, Moto Tassinari VForce4 reed valve system, Uni air filter, Zeeltronic programmable CDI, NGK spark plug, JL Street twin exhaust, Metmachex aluminum swingarm and LMC silicon radiator coolant hose.
The original RD350LC engine power was derived from a 347cc, liquid cooled, 2 stroke, parallel-twin motor that churned out almost 49BHP, which was said to be an immense power ratio at the time. Compared to the air-cooled engine in the RD350, the RD350 LC's engine was liquid-cooled to meet more stringent emissions regulations. For comparison: the 373cc mill of the current KTM 390 Duke churns out 43.5BHP.
The Yamaha RD 350 LC was sold worldwide between 1980 and 1983, but, it was never officially released in India. This did not deter motorcycling aficionados from getting this bike imported through private channels. Besides an impressive collection of RX100 and Yamaha RD350 bikes, Mr Mahendra Singh Dhoni is also a proud owner of a variety of modern super bikes such as Harley Davidson Fat Boy, Kawasaki Ninja H2 and the lesser known Confederate X132 Hellcat.
