The MG Air EV has been tested by MG Motor India in Gujarat, and it is expected to make its debut at the Auto Expo 2023 in January.
As its second vehicle in our market, MG Motor India made a risky decision in 2020 by introducing the MZ ZS EV. With only a 0.3% market share of the total number of passenger vehicles, the electric car market was also in its infancy when the company was only a year old. In the previous two years, the EV market has grown to a single-digit share, and even MG Motor India has experienced success with the ZS EV. Despite this, the company is preparing to introduce a new EV early in the next year. The corporation has previously disclosed ambitions to target lower segments with more affordable electric cars. Yes! In Q2 2023, an electric vehicle from MG Motor India will make its Indian debut.
Rajeev Chaba, President and Managing Director of MG Motor India, said in an interview with Siddharth Vinayak Patankar, Editor-in-Chief of carandbike, on the sidelines of the 62nd SIAM Convention, "Definitely it's not going to be a typical product or a mainstream vehicle. In all honesty, it will be a new urban mobility solution. Therefore, I'm confident that both a lot of guys will dislike it and a lot of guys will adore it. There will therefore be strong opinions, but we are optimistic. We will therefore offer a new generation a new urban mobility solution. The naming, segmentation, and formation processes will all change in the new world. So leave the car's naming to the market and you professionals. It's how you view it, but the end result will be totally different.
Chaba had earlier discussed targeting the subcompact and entry level EV segment citing better volume and price competitiveness in reference to the market reaction Tata Motors received for the Nexon EV. In Gujarat, the MG Air EV is undergoing testing in preparation for its January 2023 premiere at the Auto Expo. The Air EV will likely be MG Motor India's next or fifth introduction as well. The Wuling Honguang EV that is sold in China is the ancestor of the MG Air EV. There will apparently be two battery options, with a 200–300 km anticipated range.
Either a single-motor system producing 30kW (40.23 bhp) or 50kW (67.05 bhp) will power the EV. Tata AutoComp, which has a joint venture with Chinese battery provider Gotion for the design, manufacturing, supply, and servicing of battery packs in the nation, is projected to be MG's local source for battery packs. The Mahindra e20 EV, which was originally offered in our market, shares a lot of similarities with the MG Air EV in terms of appearance, but is expected to be more technologically advanced, have higher performance and range, and have a roomier interior.
