A wagon R exemplar is unveiled by Maruti in New Delhi which is a flex fuel vehicle based on evaluation of flex fuel technology for Indian market. The Wagon R prototype has been made to be fueled by an ethanol-petrol blend between 20 percent (E20) and 85 percent (E85).
Suzuki motor Corporation, Japan supported Maruti in designing and developing the Wagon R. It has been designed locally. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari was present at the unveiling of the prototype.Wagon R prototype undergone multiple engine modifications to suit flex fuel. Flex fuel vehicles has to go under some modifications over regular gasoline engines in order to have the ability to handle the corrosive nature of ethanol and to maintain its lower calorific value.Like ethanol sensor for ethanol percentage detection and heated fuel rail for cold start assistance ,this prototype is running on new fuel system technology. It updates the engine management system, fuel injector, fuel pump and some other mechanical components to prolong the ability of engine. Engine will be made in compliance with BS6 Phase-II emission norms.
As compared to a traditional gasoline Wagon R, the new ethanol fuel based vehicle operates on E-85 fuel and will reduce about 79 percent of tailpipe emissions without compromising its power and performance, claimed Hisashi Takeuchi, managing director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India LimitedMaruti declared that it will launch its first flex fuel vehicle in the compact segment by 2025. In addition to this, all the cars will be in compliance with E20 by March 2023.Along with flex fuel based vehicle, Maruti is also hugely opting for few other alternative fuels like bio-CNG and CNG– as of now, Maruti is selling the widest range of CNG vehicles in the country. And since the company is gradually working to build robust hybrid portfolio, it will launch its much awaited first full-electric vehicle in India by 2025.
In the month of October, Toyota exhibited its latest-gen Corolla Hybrid that was set to work with ethanol-blended fuel. It was presented as a pilot project and technology demonstrator to test flex-fuel-generated cars in India.The Corolla Hybrid by Toyota was generated by 2.0-litre petrol engine that runs on E85 ethanol, and also comes with strong hybrid technology.
