The much-anticipated Mahindra Thar 2WD has been given a price. The new 1.5-liter diesel edition of the Mahindra Thar 2WD costs Rs 9.99 lakh, while the 2.0-liter turbo-petrol AT is priced at Rs 13.49 lakh (ex-showroom). There are two trim levels for the Thar 2WD: AX (O) and LX. The first deliveries are scheduled to begin on January 14. Please note that the pricing are introductory and only valid for the first 10,000 reservations.

Highlights

  • The 2WD Thar has two engine choices.

  • Only the manual transmission is included with the 1.5 diesel engine.

  • The 2.0-liter petrol 2WD model only has a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Here is a full breakdown of the costs for both the 2WD and 4WD versions of the Thar.

| Thar 2WD variants | Price | Thar 4WD Variants | Price ||----------------------|---------------|----------------------|----------------|| 1.5 diesel MT AX (O) | Rs 9.99 Lakh | 2.0 Petrol MT AX(O) | Rs 13.59 lakh || 1.5 diesel MT LX | Rs 10.99 lakh | 2.2 diesel MT AX (O) | Rs. 14.16 lakh || 2.0 Petrol MT LX | RS 13.49 lakh | 2.0 Petrol MT LX | Rs 14.28 lakh || - | | 2.2 diesel MT LX | Rs 14.87 lakh || - | | 2.0 petrol LTX | Rs 15.82 lakh || - | | 2.2 diesel AT LX | Rs 16.29 lakh |

The 4X2 and 4X4 variants of the 2.0-liter petrol-AT LX model differ by Rs 2.33 lakh, as seen in the above table. The pricing difference between the diesel-MT AX (O) and LX variations' 4X2 and 4X4 versions is, however, Rs 4.17 lakh and Rs 3.88 lakh, respectively. For the diesel, the smaller engine, lower tax, and lack of a 4X4 system are thought to be the reason of the price difference.

Mahindra Thar 2WD: available engines and gearboxes

In addition to the Thar 2WD's lack of 4WD gear, Mahindra has fitted the vehicle with a 1.5-litre diesel engine, a four-cylinder unit that produces 117 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque. In comparison to vehicles with larger engines, the Thar qualifies for a lower tax bracket thanks to its 1.5-liter diesel engine and shorter 4-meter length.

But the Thar 2WD 1.5 diesel only has a 6-speed manual transmission. The more expensive Thar 4WD with the larger 2.2-litre engine will have to be chosen by clients wishing to purchase a Thar diesel automatic.

The same 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine that powers the Thar 4WD is also available as the second powertrain option for the Thar 2WD. There is no manual gearbox option for this engine; it only comes with a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The engine produces 152 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque, much like in the 4X4 versions.

Mahindra Thar 2WD: Exterior

The only visual difference between the Thar 2WD and 4WD is the absence of the 4x4 badge on the former. Additionally, Mahindra has added two new exterior colour options for the Thar: the in-demand Everest White and Blazing Bronze, both of which are also offered on the XUV300. Additionally, only the hard-top option will be offered for the 2WD Thar.

The 4x4 selector seen inside the Thar 4WD is replaced by a cubby hole in the 2WD model. The control panel located between the steering wheel and the driver's door allows you to activate the Thar 2WD's auto start/stop feature. Recently, the traction control, hill descent control, and door lock/unlock buttons for the Thar were moved from the control panel to the centre console.

Everything else on the Thar stays the same aside from them. It retains the 7.0-inch touchscreen with connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, electrically adjustable outside rearview mirrors, cruise control, and LED daytime running lights (DRLs).

New Mahindra Thar 4X4

Mahindra has added a significant improvement to the 4WD models in addition to the new 2WD type. The mechanical locking differential that was formerly available in the 4WD variant has been replaced by an electronic brake locking differential. The system, which was created in partnership with Bosch, improves grip in low-traction conditions. The LX Diesel 4WD models will offer the mechanical locking differential (MLD) as an option for those who still favour it.

Mahindra Thar 2WD: Indian rivals

Buyers who desire a Thar but aren't as eager to use it off-road are the target audience for the Thar 2WD.Although the SUV currently lacks a direct competitor, the more expensive Thar 4WD competes against vehicles like the Force Gurkha and the planned Maruti Jimny, which will go on sale by the middle of 2023.
