50/50 Market Split
MG Motor India’s sales in September 2024 displayed a near-equal split between EVs and ICE vehicles. Of the 4,588 units sold, 2,250 units (49.04%) were EVs, while 2,338 units (50.96%) were ICE vehicles. This balance between electric and traditional vehicles illustrates the company’s evolving strategy as electric vehicles gain traction in India’s automotive market.
Despite this growth in the EV segment, ICE vehicles continue to hold a slight majority, emphasising that while the future may be electric, fuel-powered vehicles still maintain a significant market presence.
September 2023 vs. September 2024
In September 2024, MG Motor India sold a total of 4,588 units, a reduction from the 5,003 units sold in the same month last year. This marks a year-over-year (YoY) decline of 8.30%, or 415 fewer units sold.
The drop in sales can be attributed to multiple factors, including market challenges such as reduced foot traffic at dealerships due to cultural and environmental influences.
August 2024 vs. September 2024
On a month-over-month (MoM) basis, MG Motor India saw a slight improvement in sales, with 17 more units sold in September compared to August. In August 2024, the company sold 4,571 units, which increased to 4,588 units in September, representing a modest growth of 0.37%. While the growth is small, it reflects steady performance during a challenging market period.
Looking ahead, MG Motor India plans to transition its retail sales operations to the Vaahan Portal starting in October 2024. This move aligns the company with national regulations and aims to streamline the vehicle registration and reporting process. The adoption of the Vaahan Portal is expected to enhance operational efficiency and increase transparency in MG Motor India's sales process.
As MG Motor India heads into the festive season, the company is hopeful for an increase in sales, particularly in the NEV segment. Consumer sentiment tends to improve during this period, and MG Motor expects to see a rise in foot traffic at dealerships, potentially driving a higher volume of sales. With the NEV segment consistently performing well, the company is betting big on the continued growth of electric vehicles in India.
