Hyundai has unveiled the test footage of the Ioniq 6 sedan's performance "N" model named the RN22E. The car will have fake gear shift and exhaust noise.
Highlights
When electric cars don't burn your face off with two-second runs to 60 mph, they aren't all that thrilling. Many behave like regular ICE cars, shifting, revving, and backfiring. For enthusiasts, there is unquestionably something missing from the experience, and many manufacturers of electric cars do not even attempt to solve this. Some people include simulated engine noise, but Hyundai has other, more complex plans.
The carmaker displayed test footage of its new Ioniq 6 sedan's performance "N" model, which features an electronic exhaust note both inside and outside the vehicle. The vehicle, known as the RN22E, was also seen on a chassis dyno changing with paddles, just like many of the performance vehicles it now makes that are fitted with dual-clutch transmissions. While a petrol-powered car has a physical transmission, the dual-motor EV does not. Instead, it simulates the experience of shifting gears using the software. The section that interests us begins at around 5:10 in the video below.
It is evident from remarks gathered by Car Expert that this feature will be included in the next Ioniq 5 N crossover, even if it is easily deactivated. In circumstances like slow-moving traffic, where shifting gears frequently can be a bit of a hassle, pulling back on both paddles causes the car to behave like a typical electric vehicle. Almost anything can be modified in terms of exhaust noise. Hyundai claims that users will even be able to create their own sounds.
Is this information sufficient to pique drivers' interest in EVs? A rising number of automakers firmly believe this to be the case. Although it's not yet known if they are real or simulations, the upcoming electric muscle vehicle from Dodge will feature gears and an exhaust note similar to the Hyundai. In its new EVs, Lexus is attempting a similar concept. Even the extremely quick Hummer EV produces noises to add a little bit of theatre. Most also have mimicked exhaust notes.
It remains to be seen if this is a peculiarity of early electric vehicles or a trend that will endure. The Porsche Taycan is the only EV that has a physical transmission as of now. Although its two-speed automatic transmission is simply intended to keep the motor in an effective operating range, we might see more of them in the future.
