Hyundai will debut the Ioniq 5 in India at the January 2023 Auto Expo. The automaker has announced that reservations for its new flagship model in the country will begin on December 20, 2022.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the sibling vehicle to the Kia EV6, which is already available in India. While the Kia EV6 is a pure import, Hyundai will construct the Ioniq 5 domestically.
The Ioniq 5 would be priced affordably in comparison to the Kia EV6 (Rs 59.96 lakh), which is available as a CBU in India (Complete Built-Up). The pricing difference will be due to the differential in customs charges between CBU and CKD autos in India.
Although Hyundai has not specified which battery pack or powertrain combination it will offer in India, the Ioniq 5 will be priced lower than the Kia EV6, which has a larger 77.4kWh battery. According to a Hyundai insider, the company's flagship EV will cost less than Rs 50 lakh.
In addition to the Kia EV6, it will compete with the Volvo XC40 Recharge and similarly priced EVs such as the Mini Cooper SE.
The Ioniq 5's distinctive look, which closely resembles the 45 EV concept revealed at the 2019 Frankfurt Auto Show, is one of its selling points. Sharp lines, flat surfaces, and an SUV-like stance with dramatically sloped windscreens define the vintage style. It also boasts pixelated front and back lights, as well as an elaborate design for the 20-inch aero-optimized alloys, helping the Ioniq 5 stand out from other Hyundai vehicles.
The inside of the Ioniq 5 is basic in design, with a flat floor, flexible seats, and a movable center console that can slide back and forth by up to 140mm. The cabin is rather big, and Hyundai has employed environmentally friendly materials such as recycled plastic bottle textiles and eco-friendly leather for the seats and door upholstery, headliner, and carpet. Bio-paint was also used on the crash pads, switches, steering wheel, and door pads.
The Ioniq 5 comes with a pair of 12-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, a head-up display with augmented reality functions, ADAS, and even digital screens for rear-view mirror display. However, how much of it makes it to the India-spec model remains to be seen.
Hyundai offers the Ioniq 5 with two battery pack variants in the international market: 58kWh and 72.6kWh, both of which are available in AWD and rear-wheel drive configurations. The smaller battery provides 170hp in RWD mode and 233hp in AWD mode; the larger battery produces 217hp in RWD mode and 305hp in AWD mode.
The smaller battery pack has a range of 383km in the official test cycle, while the larger battery has a range of 481km. The Ioniq 5 supports superfast 800V charging, which can charge the battery from 0% to 80% in 18 minutes. It will be interesting to see which powertrain configuration makes it to India.
