People have auctioned off anything from John Lennon's tooth to a slice of cake from Queen Elizabeth II's 1947 wedding. Items from Twitter's offices can now be added to that list.

Yes, you read it correctly: if you've ever wanted a six-foot-high sculpture of a @ symbol or an espresso machine used by the social media networking giant's staff, the auction is the place to go.

Here's a look at what was up for grabs and what it means for the Elon Musk-owned corporation.

Heritage Global Partners organized the 27-hour auction, which began on Tuesday.

The firm organizing the sale stated that 631 lots of "surplus corporate office assets" were offered for bidding, with prices ranging from $25 (Rs 2,033) to $15,000 (Rs 12.2 lakh).

Everything from a neon electrical sign clearly displaying the company's trademark bird insignia, which drew a bid of $17,000 (Rs 13.83 lakh), to packs of N95 masks was up for grabs.

The auction also included a bird statue with a price of $16,000 (Rs 13 lakh); a six-foot ornamental planter designed like the "@" symbol (bids were up to $4,100 (Rs 3.3 lakh); and five espresso machines created by the Italian business La Marzocco, one of which got a bid of $11,000 (Rs 8.95 lakh).

Aside from these goods, furniture such as a unique reclaimed wood conference table was up for grabs, with the last offer coming in at around $10,500. (Rs 8.5 lakh). Other high-end furniture on the auction site included a Knoll womb chair, Eames molded plywood lounge chairs, and an Erik Jrgensen Savannah two-seater couch.

According to Ross Dove, CEO of Heritage Global, which is conducting the auction, more than 20,000 individuals have registered to bid – more than in any of the hundreds of auctions the organization has conducted in its 90-year history.

"The assets are incredibly strong because they acquired the best of the best," he told the New York Times, "but I don't believe we would have had this audience without the preoccupation with Twitter." "Anything he does grabs attention," he said of Musk.

Why did Elon Musk auctioned Twitter Corporate Office Assets?

While Heritage Global Partners claims that the sale, which is estimated to bring in $1.5 million (Rs 12.2 crore), has nothing to do with the company's financial situation, the timing of the auction cannot be overlooked.

"They've sold for $44 billion, and we're selling a few of seats and desks and laptops. If someone honestly believes that selling a few laptops and chairs would pay for the mountain there, they're a stupid," he was quoted as saying to Fortune.

Since taking over the firm in October of last year, Elon Musk has been rushing to slash expenses, taking harsh measures such as cutting off half of the company's 6,000 employees and delaying office rent payments. Twitter is accused of failing to pay rent at locations throughout the world, including their San Francisco headquarters, which is being sued for nonpayment.

In an effort to generate cash, he also launched Twitter Blue, a $8 membership service. However, the social media behemoth continues to lose money, and the situation is deteriorating as sponsors drop advertisements as a result of Musk's hands-off attitude to content management.

Indeed, the company's financial health has lately made headlines, with Musk telling staff that there is a "good risk that Twitter may not survive the forthcoming economic crisis," according to an Associated Press article.

Early last week, it was also reported that the corporation was considering selling usernames to increase income. According to the New York Times, developers at the corporation are exploring holding online auctions where anyone may bid on usernames, also known as handles. It's unclear whether the proposal will be implemented, and if it does, whether it would effect all accounts or just some of them.

There were also claims that Twitter sold some of its blue ticks to the Taliban, a decision that was revoked after internet backlash. According to The Guardian, two major Taliban officials — Hedayatullah Hedayat and Abdul Haq Hammad — removed the blue tick from their Twitter accounts shortly after the public became aware of it and chastised Twitter for doing so.
