Citroen C3 - Rs 8.15 lakh

The C3 isn't flawless, but its 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine packs a powerful punch. It produces 110hp and 190Nm of torque, which is more than plenty for this 1,035kg crossover. The C3 turbo takes off quickly, with performance centered on the low and mid-range. The six-speed manual transmission shifts smoothly as well. The steering is likewise confidently weighted, and the ride and handling balance seems sturdy and carefully constructed for a car in this segment. If you are ready to forego a few frills in exchange for a pleasurable driving experience, the C3 may be your best option in the entry-level segment.

Hyundai i20 N Line - Rs 10.00 - 12.11 lakh

While the 120hp 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine is standard on the normal i20, the i20 N-Line takes it a step further with stiffer suspension, a sportier exhaust, and quicker steering. The engine has been carried over from the normal i20 and performs admirably with a robust mid-range performance and rev-happy attitude. But it's the N-Line-specific chassis changes that really make a difference in the driving experience. A true manual gearbox, on the other hand, is sorely lacking, as it is only available with a 7-speed DCT or a 6-speed iMT transmission.

Honda City 1.5 petrol - Rs 11.57 - 15.32 lakh

Although it lacks the punch of a turbocharger, the City's 121hp, 1.5-litre iVTEC engine is the only naturally aspirated unit on this list, and it's a pleasant one at that. It's a powerful and tractable motor that performs admirably at both ends of the rev range. The NA engine with a 6-speed manual transmission is the one to choose, while it is also available with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The City provides a composed ride over rough and broken surfaces, and its handling is likewise predictable, with beautifully weighted steering, making it a simple car to handle.

Mahindra XUV300 TurboSport - Rs 10.35 Lakh

The XUV300 was recently updated with a new 1.2-litre three-cylinder mStallion turbo-petrol engine that produces 131hp and 230Nm, which are class-leading values. Aside from the numbers, the engine feels eager to produce performance with every right foot movement. While this isn't a high-revving engine, the tidal wave of torque in the mid-range is likely to satisfy most driving enthusiasts' performance expectations. The XUV300 has long pleased us with its ride quality and handling balance, making it one of the most enjoyable SUVs to drive in its class.

Skoda Slavia 1.5 - Rs 16.79 - 18.39 lakh

The Slavia's 115hp, 1.0-litre TSi engine delivers plenty of power, but the more powerful 150hp, 250Nm, 1.5-litre TSi engine is the clear winner. The 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, with its snappy mid-range and robust top-end, enjoys being revved to redline. This, together with the Slavia's excellent ride and handling balance, makes it an enthusiast's dream. The same engine is available on the VW Virtus, but the Slavia has an advantage in that it comes with a 6-speed manual transmission instead of the 7-speed DSG unit found on both.
