Mahindra, the leading SUV manufacturer, is set to redefine the premium SUV segment with the upcoming launch of the 5-door version of its popular Thar model. The 2024 Mahindra Thar has been spotted in recent spy shots, revealing several significant upgrades over its 3-door predecessor. From larger touchscreens to digital displays, the new Thar aims to cater to a more comfortable and family-oriented market segment.
The decision to introduce a 5-door Thar comes around four years after the launch of the 2nd-gen 3-door Thar. The 5-door variant not only boasts a larger size and increased seating capacity but also marks a shift in positioning towards a premium, family-oriented SUV.
The 5-door Thar will feature a larger touchscreen, likely a 10.25-inch unit, in line with the industry standard for SUVs. The upgrade is reminiscent of other recent Mahindra models, such as the XUV400, offering enhanced infotainment capabilities.
The infotainment system will incorporate the updated AdrenoX software, supporting over-the-air (OTA) updates and wireless connectivity for the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Top-spec variants will include a new digital instrument console, potentially a 10.25-inch unit similar to the one used in the XUV700.
With a 300 mm longer wheelbase, the 5-door Thar promises spacious interiors, especially benefiting the rear passengers. Expect a larger boot space, intelligently designed cabin with additional storage, and improved material quality. Customization options for seats, individual armrests, and rear-facing seats with access to AC vents and charging ports add to the comfort and convenience.
The larger size of the 5-door Thar may impact its agility compared to the 3-door variant. The suspension setup is expected to be tweaked to accommodate the increased weight. Engine options will include the 2.0-litre turbo petrol and the 2.2-litre diesel units, with transmission options of 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic.
Spy shots also reveal the inclusion of new 19-inch alloys with 255/60 rubber, adding a touch of style to the rugged SUV. The aesthetic upgrade is set to enhance the overall appeal of the Thar.
Mahindra is gearing up to commence with the production of Thar 5-door by Q3 2024, with an estimated monthly production capacity of 4,000 units. The SUV could potentially be launched under the nickname Thar Armada, a name recently trademarked by Mahindra. As the automotive industry evolves, the 2024 Mahindra Thar 5-door signals a new era for premium SUVs, combining style, technology, and practicality.
