Volkswagen Plans to Add 4WD Option to Upcoming ID 2-Based Electric SUV.

Volkswagen's upcoming ID 2-based electric SUV set to offer 4WD option

Volkswagen is preparing to launch a new entry-level electric SUV that will be built on the platform of the ID 2 EV hatchback and positioned below the ID 3. This upcoming EV SUV, called the ID 2X, is anticipated to feature typical SUV characteristics such as increased ground clearance, as well as the option of a 4WD drivetrain.

According to insiders, Volkswagen has not yet approved the production of the ID 2X SUV despite initial plans to introduce a rugged version of the ID 2 hatchback. This move would enable Volkswagen to expand its range of entry-level petrol-powered vehicles that include the Polo and T-Cross.

The new ID 2X SUV is expected to be based on an enhanced version of the MEB Entry skateboard platform, which has been designed for entry-level EVs with different body styles.

The introduction of a four-wheel drive system in the ID 2 range could potentially pave the way for an electric successor to the Volkswagen Golf R, as the company aims to offer several electric R models in the coming years.

Volkswagen had previously teased the possibility of 4WD high-performance hatchbacks with the ID X concept, which was essentially a sportier version of the ID 3 with a lower ride height and improved handling. The ID X concept boasted an impressive 329 horsepower, a 0-100kph acceleration time of 5.3 seconds, and a unique drift mode. However, it is uncertain whether the smaller MEB platform could handle this level of power and the corresponding suspension upgrades.

Taigun, Tiguan, and T-Roc Among the Popular SUVs

Currently, Volkswagen offers several petrol-powered models in India, such as the Virtus sedan, and the Taigun and Tiguan SUV. The brand is also testing the VW ID 4 SUV for an Indian market launch scheduled sometime in 2022.
