  • PEAK EV project focuses on localized, cost-effective electric cars.
  • Open to diluting stake for suitable collaborations.
  • Committed to manufacturing affordable EVs for mainstream buyers.
  • Strategic alliances reflect a proactive approach to navigate India's evolving automotive landscape.

Skoda Auto Volkswagen Pvt Ltd, the Indian arm of the Volkswagen Group, is actively pursuing partnerships to navigate the challenges associated with the gradual adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the Indian market. The company is exploring opportunities for collaborative efforts to manage the high upfront investment and risks involved in the EV segment.

Testing the Waters with Skoda Enyaq EV Prototypes

The company has been testing Skoda Enyaq EV prototypes in India, but to make a successful entry into the mass market, a more localized approach is required. Skoda is initiating a new project codenamed PEAK EV, aiming to leverage the MEB21G low-cost EV architecture with extensive localization for cost efficiency.

Active Search for Potential Partnerships

Due to the evolving EV market in India, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is actively seeking potential partners to collaborate on the development and manufacturing of highly localized electric cars. Reports suggest that Volkswagen is open to a strategic partnership with another automotive manufacturer in India and is willing to consider diluting its stake in Skoda Auto Volkswagen (SAVWIPL) for the right synergies.

Commitment to Localization and Export

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India aims to create a locally manufactured electric car that can be exported to ASEAN nations and other markets. With India as a key manufacturing hub, the company plans to expand its portfolio of MQB A0 IN platform-based vehicles while driving efforts towards EV adoption in the future.

Collaborating with a suitable partner will enable Skoda Auto Volkswagen India to share this substantial investment and mitigate associated risks. The platform aims to produce affordable, locally manufactured EVs targeting mainstream car buyers in India.

Strategic Partnerships in the EV Landscape

Volkswagen Group has previously explored collaborations, including talks with Tata Motors and engagements with China-based SAIC for platform sharing and production capacity. The recent agreement with Mahindra & Mahindra involves sourcing VW’s MEB electric car components, showcasing the company's strategic partnerships in the evolving EV landscape. High-ranking executives from Germany are open to discussions with suitable business groups to potentially form an alliance in India, emphasizing the primary objective of sharing investments for the transition to electric vehicle platforms in the future.
