Tata Motors faced a 3% drop in passenger vehicle sales and a 15% decrease in commercial vehicle sales in August 2024, with a slight increase in CV exports.
Tata Motors, a major player in the Indian automotive sector, reported a notable decline in total sales for August 2024, reaching 71,693 units. This represents a decrease of 11% from the 80,633 units sold in August 2023. The downturn was observed across most segments, with passenger vehicles (PVs) falling by 3% and commercial vehicles (CVs) experiencing a more significant 15% year-over-year decline. However, there was a slight improvement in CV exports during the same period.

In August 2024, Tata Motors recorded domestic PV sales of 44,142 units. This reflects a 3.01% decline from the 45,513 units sold in August 2023, equating to a reduction of 1,371 units. Month-over-month, PV sales also decreased by 1.30%, from 44,725 units in July 2024.

Exports of passenger vehicles fell by 18% to 344 units from 420 units in August 2023. Combining both domestic and export figures, the total PV sales for August 2024 amounted to 44,486 units, marking a 3% year-over-year decrease from 45,933 units in August 2023. Specifically for electric vehicles, domestic and export sales together dropped by 5% to 5,935 units from 6,236 units a year ago. Tata Motors has launched the Curvv EV in India, with deliveries starting and the ICE variants scheduled to launch on September 2, 2024.

The commercial vehicle sector also faced a downturn in August 2024. High Commercial Vehicle (HCV) sales fell by 21% to 7,116 units, down from 9,000 units sold in August 2023. Intermediate and Light Commercial Vehicle (ILMCV) sales decreased by 5% to 4,965 units. On a positive note, passenger carriers saw a 14% increase, with sales rising to 3,410 units from 2,986 units in August 2023. However, Small Commercial Vehicle (SCV) cargo and pickup sales saw a significant decline of 23%, falling to 10,373 units from 13,555 units last year.
Total CV domestic sales were 25,864 units in August 2024, down 16% from 30,748 units in August 2023. On the export front, CV exports improved slightly by 1%, reaching 1,343 units compared to 1,329 units in the same month last year.
Outlook
Tata Motors continues to manage its extensive product portfolio, which includes models like the Nexon, Punch, Harrier, Safari, Tiago, Altroz, and Tigor, alongside its EV offerings. Despite the challenges faced in August 2024, the company sales might rise by the end of 2024 with the commencement of Curvv EV deliveries and the launch of the Curvv ICE on September 2.
