Unveiled in South Africa, this innovative electric version of the popular Thar off-road SUV showcases Mahindra's vision for sustainable adventure.
Mahindra unveils Thar.e electric SUV concept in South Africa
Mahindra and Mahindra, one of India’s leading automakers, has revealed the Thar.e electric SUV concept at an event in Cape Town, South Africa on August 15, 2023. The Thar.e is an electric version of the popular Thar off-road SUV, which is based on a modified INGLO platform. The Thar.e concept showcases Mahindra’s vision for the future of electric mobility and off-roading.
The Thar.e concept has a distinctive design that is different from the current Thar SUVs sold in India. The front fascia features a square LED headlight with a sectioned pattern, a black closed-out grille with the Thar.e logo, and a chunky bumper with a red hook.
The side profile reveals a five-door layout with large wheel arches and all-terrain tyres. The rear end has square LED tail lights that echo the design of the headlights. The Thar.e concept also has a Thar.e badging on the tailgate and a spare wheel mounted on it.

The Thar.e concept is built on the INGLO-P1 EV platform, which is designed to offer improved range, expanded battery capacity, and lower body weight. The platform also enables increased ground clearance and all-wheel drive technology for the electric SUV. The Thar.e concept has a wheelbase ranging between 2,776 mm and 2,976 mm, and a ground clearance of around 300 mm.
Mahindra has not disclosed any details about the powertrain, performance, or range of the Thar.e concept. However, it is expected that the production version of the Thar.e will be launched in India in 2025 as part of Mahindra’s Born Electric lineup. The Thar.e will compete with other electric SUVs such as the Tata Sierra EV and the Hyundai Kona Electric.
The Thar.e concept is not only a showcase of Mahindra’s electric capabilities but also a testament to its global ambitions. Mahindra hopes to export the Thar.e to other markets where it can leverage its brand image and off-road heritage.
The Thar.e concept also marks the first clean sheet design of a traditional Mahindra nameplate under ex-Tata Motors’ designer Pratap Bose’s watch.
