India's Growing Presence in Global Passenger Vehicle Exports
India's automotive industry is gaining traction as a prominent exporter of passenger vehicles, offering top-quality products at competitive prices. Domestic carmakers like Mahindra are venturing into overseas markets to establish themselves as global players.
The upcoming annual extravaganza by Mahindra, scheduled for August 15 in South Africa, will be a crucial event showcasing the brand's new offerings, including the Z121 concept - a brand-new pickup based on the Scorpio N platform, set to hit production in 2025.

Compared to the Scorpio N SUV, the pickup version will boast a longer wheelbase, providing ample space for a larger load bed, making it suitable for various cargo needs. The current Scorpio Classic follows a similar pattern, with the SUV version having a wheelbase of 2.6 meters, while the pickup variant, known as 'Getaway' in India, features a wheelbase of over 3 meters, marketed as 'Pik Up' in overseas markets like South Africa and Australia.
Mahindra plans to offer the Scorpio N pickup in both single- and double-cab body styles, along with standard and tray-back bed variants, catering to specific export markets.
Powertrain Options and Performance
The Scorpio N SUV offers two engine choices - a 2.0-litre turbo petrol motor generating 200 hp and 370 Nm of torque (6MT), and 380 Nm of torque (6AT). The diesel variant comes in two states of tune, producing 130 hp and 300 Nm, or 172 hp and 370 Nm (6MT), with 400 Nm of torque when paired with the 6AT.
Additionally, a 4WD option is available with the diesel variants. It is expected that the same powertrain options will be available for the Scorpio N pickup.
Launch Strategy and Market Potential
Mahindra is likely to continue the use of the 'Pik Up' brand name for the Scorpio N pickup in markets like South Africa and Australia. The company may choose to sell both the existing pickup and the new Scorpio N pickup alongside, offering customers more options at different price points.
With the Scorpio N pickup, Mahindra aims to tap into South Africa's thriving pickup market, commonly known as "bakkies," where pickups enjoy significant popularity. In fact, Mahindra has been recognized as the fastest-growing automobile company in South Africa in 2022, with sales witnessing a remarkable 78% increase compared to the previous year.
Mahindra's Global Reach and Expanding Presence
Apart from South Africa, Mahindra has a robust presence in over a dozen global markets, with Australia being a key focus area. The company recently marked a milestone with the opening of its 50th dealership in Australia, where pickups and SUVs like XUV700 and Scorpio N are among the popular offerings. The introduction of the Scorpio N pickup will further solidify Mahindra's position in the Australian market, which also favours pickups.
Mahindra's Strategic Move to Strengthen Global Position
The Mahindra Scorpio N pickup holds immense potential as a versatile and advanced vehicle, catering to diverse market demands. With its aggressive expansion strategy and a focus on delivering high-quality products, Mahindra aims to enhance its global presence and solidify its position as a leading player in the international automotive arena.
