Hyundai's Mobion concept wows CES 2024 with crabwalk agility and advanced lighting, hinting at a revolutionary future for electric vehicles.
In a dazzling display of innovation, Hyundai has revealed a groundbreaking concept car at CES 2024, based on the Ioniq 5 electric vehicle platform. Dubbed the Mobion, this unique concept showcases complex crabwalk-like manoeuvres and introduces cutting-edge lighting technology. Developed by Hyundai Mobis, the parts group of the South Korean automaker, the Mobion is equipped with an e-corner system that enables individual control of each wheel, allowing the vehicle to move laterally.
Unlike conventional vehicles, the Mobion replaces traditional axle shafts and additional braking components with a revolutionary "In-Wheel tech." This innovative system provides each wheel with its own self-contained powertrain, featuring an independent electric motor, braking, steering, and suspension functions. This advanced configuration empowers the Mobion to perform lateral movements, pivot turns, and even execute sharp donuts.
While reminiscent of the Hummer EV's Crabwalk feature, the Mobion takes it a step further. The concept's wheels can rotate more than 90 degrees, showcasing a level of articulation that surpasses the traditional four-wheel steering systems. Hyundai Mobis emphasizes the complexity of the Mobion's technology, promising an even more upgraded version in the near future.
In addition to its exceptional mobility, the Mobion introduces a state-of-the-art exterior lighting system. This system not only enhances the vehicle's aesthetics but also serves a practical purpose. The Mobion's lighting can project messages to other drivers and pedestrians, alerting them of potential hazards or the vehicle's intended direction. Moreover, it contributes to the safety by illuminating the ground with images, providing visual cues in various driving situations.
While the Mobion concept is not slated for immediate production, Hyundai suggests that elements of its groundbreaking technology could influence future models. The Ioniq 5, upon which the Mobion is based, is currently available for purchase in India at a starting price of Rs 45.95 lakh, ex-showroom. Hyundai Mobis assures that the ongoing development of these innovative features may eventually find their way into production Hyundai cars and SUVs.

Hyundai's Mobion concept stands as a testament to the brand's commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive technology. With its unparalleled crabwalk capability and advanced lighting system, the Mobion offers a glimpse into the future of electric vehicles. While the concept may not hit the roads anytime soon, it paves the way for exciting possibilities in Hyundai's upcoming lineup, promising a blend of performance, safety, and groundbreaking innovation.
