Hyundai India currently has only Kona EV in the electric vehicle category which is a premium product. It retails at a price upwards of Rs. 23 lakhs. At this price point, it gets only a few buyers.
However, the EV market is going to expand in the coming times and Hyundai wants more people to contribute to a greener environment. Hence, they are developing a mass market electric vehicle at a lower cost.
Unlike the Kona eSUV which is a derived version of Kona SUV that gets an IC engine, the new mass market EV will be constructed from ground level. Hyundai will prepare a dedicated platform to serve their motive of producing greener alternatives to their current vehicle lineup. It is also speculated that this new platform will be Made in India and Made for India product. It may also get exported to other nations but there's no clear sign of that. To make the new vehicle affordable, Hyundai will keep the costs in check by keeping it 90% localised. The new platform to be built may also handle new powertrain options which will run on fossil fuels and hybrid systems. These too are good contributors towards the environment but their possibility of arriving with the said platform is still blurred. The SUV trend is rapidly growing in the country and we expect Hyundai to come up with an eSUV too. Tata Nexon is currently selling in big numbers and is currently the top selling EV across the segments. Hyundai’s new eSUV may also arrive in the same price band which ranges between Rs. 14-15 Lakhs ex-showroom. Hyundai is known for keeping their vehicles feature loaded and we expect the same for the upcoming eSUV as well. By the time it’ll arrive, the segment will be flourished by a number of other electric SUVs from Tata, Mahindra, Citroen, MG, and a lot others. Which brand will you choose if you are buying an EV? Let's chat in the comment box.
