Delhi's innovative traffic overhaul: AI cameras with ANPR tech to curb violations, ensuring safer roads and efficient enforcement.
In a groundbreaking move, the Delhi government is set to revolutionize its approach to road safety by investing ₹20 crore in the installation of artificial intelligence-powered cameras all across the city. These cameras, equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, aim to detect and penalize traffic rule violations, fostering safer roads for both pedestrians and motorists.
The Delhi government's transport department is leading this initiative to deploy an Integrated Traffic Enforcement Management System (ITMS) throughout the capital. This advanced system leverages AI-based video analytics to restrain traffic violations such as triple riding, mobile phone usage while driving, and vehicles without a valid Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC).
The heart of the ITMS lies in its ANPR technology, capable of identifying license plates all across the vehicle categories, including the cars, heavy commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and buses. The system categorizes licence plates as 'good,' 'bad/dilapidated,' or 'broken' and employs image processing algorithms with a minimum detection accuracy of 95% and conversion accuracy of 90%.
The Delhi government has identified key traffic violations, including speed infractions, helmetless riding, triple riding, seat belt negligence, mobile phone usage, uncovered goods carriage, and overloading in commercial vehicles. The AI-powered system aims to tackle these issues by utilizing deep learning technology as a solution.
The ITMS is designed to offer insights for traffic planners through innovative dashboards, presenting data on violations, traffic count, vehicle classification, historical trends, and road or junction comparisons. This decision support system promises actionable intelligence to make Delhi's roads safer and less congested.
The ANPR-based system streamlines the enforcement process by automating traffic rule violation detection and ticket generation. The ITMS ensures efficiency and accuracy in identifying offenders based on ANPR conversion and violation detection confidence levels.

With this ambitious AI-powered endeavor, the Delhi government aims to create a pattern shift in road safety, emphasizing the importance of technology in enforcing traffic regulations. The integration of ANPR technology and the ITMS is poised to not only curb violations but also provide invaluable data for informed decision-making, ultimately making Delhi's streets safer for all.
