BMW has issued a safety recall in select markets due to a potentially deadly fault related to unintended acceleration.
The popular electric SUV from BMW, the iX, has been subject to a global recall following reports of unintended acceleration.
In a surprising turn of events, BMW has issued a recall order for its flagship electric model, the iX SUV, in multiple countries. The recall aims to address a potential fault related to sudden and unintended acceleration, which has raised concerns among owners.
The issue initially surfaced in 2022 when several iX owners reported instances of their vehicles accelerating without their intent. While the fault was initially suspected to be related to the cruise control system, investigations revealed a different cause. It was discovered that the steering angle could inadvertently lead a driver's hand to unintentionally hit the cruise control button, triggering sudden acceleration.
According to BMW, the scenario occurs when a driver engages and deactivates the cruise control, then inadvertently presses the button again without realizing it. The positioning of the cruise control button, including the speed-setting feature, appears to be the underlying cause.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue. BMW assures that cruise control, whether intentional or accidental, can be promptly deactivated to ensure safety. However, as a precautionary measure, BMW plans to inspect iX xDrive50s and iX M60s manufactured since 2022. If necessary, a software update will be rolled out to rectify the potential acceleration problem.
It's worth noting that the BMW iX made its debut in India in December 2021, imported through the Completely Built Unit (CBU) route. With a starting price of {1.16 crore (ex-showroom), the iX offers a luxurious and eco-friendly driving experience.
While this recall may raise concerns among BMW enthusiasts, it also demonstrates the brand's commitment to addressing potential issues promptly and ensuring customer safety. BMW remains dedicated to delivering innovative electric vehicles that meet the highest standards of quality and reliability.
