Hyundai's Casper EV, spotted in Australia, promises affordability, a sleek design, and advanced features, signaling Hyundai's entry into the electric SUV market.
As the electric vehicle market gains grip in Australia, Hyundai is gearing up to join the fray with its Casper EV, set to be launched later this year. The Casper EV is set to offer an affordable alternative to Australians who have witnessed a surge in electric vehicle options from Chinese brands such as GWM, MG Motor, and BYD.
Two heavily camouflaged test mules of the Casper EV have been spotted in Australia during testing. These left-hand drive models are undergoing benchmarking against the Fiat 500e electric hatch. Despite the camouflage, the exterior profile of the Casper EV remains largely similar to its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart Hyundai Casper.

Notable exterior features include circular headlamps, parametric pixel patterns on the LED light signatures, sleek LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs), sporty alloy wheels, C-pillar-mounted rear door handles, and functional roof rails. The Casper EV is also expected to introduce new color options, enhancing its visual appeal.
Reports suggest that the Casper EV will boast a slightly longer wheelbase compared to its petrol variant, potentially gaining an additional 25cm. This increased wheelbase aims to provide more cabin space and potentially accommodate a larger battery pack, contributing to an estimated range of around 320 km. This range is well-suited for both urban commutes and inter-city travel.
The Casper EV will inherit many features from its petrol-powered counterpart, with upgrades such as a larger 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system and instrument console. Additional features include a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, artificial leather upholstery, a ventilated driver’s seat, a single-pane sunroof, a fully automatic air conditioner, a hi-pass system, a mood lamp, and the Blue Link connectivity suite.
The Casper EV will be equipped with a front radar module, enabling a range of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features. These include lane departure prevention assistance, forward collision avoidance assist, high beam assist, rear cross-traffic collision prevention assist, rear collision prevention assistance, front vehicle departure notification, driver attention warning, and safe exit warning. Safety features also include a comprehensive 7-airbag system.
Hyundai aims to make a significant impact in the Australian EV market with a competitive sub-AUD 40,000 pricing for the Casper EV, approximately Rs 21.55 lakh. Notably, the Casper EV will be the first in its segment to be manufactured outside of China, distinguishing itself in a segment primarily dominated by Chinese brands. While Hyundai already offers the Kona Electric in Australia, the Casper EV presents a more budget-friendly option, providing accessibility to a broader consumer base.
Although the Casper EV won't be available in India, Hyundai has plans to introduce the Exter EV later this year, aimed at competing with recently launched models like the Punch EV. Hyundai continues to demonstrate its commitment to a sustainable and electrified automotive future with these strategic launches.
