Volkswagen has recently launched the anniversary edition of VW Taigun. The price range for Volkswagen's Taigun SUV's First Anniversary Edition is between Rs. 15.40 lakh and Rs. 16.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The brand used the top-end Topline trim, which is only available with the 1.0-litre TSI engine, as the platform for the Taigun First Anniversary Edition.

Although not Volkswagen's first SUV in India, the Taigun is undoubtedly the most significant model thus far. Because the Taigun is here to make a huge impact in the high-volume midsize SUV sector, as opposed to the Tiguan, Tiguan AllSpace, and T-Roc that operate in the premium and specialised segments. As you may already be aware, the Taigun and Skoda Kushaq are related, with the midsize SUVs serving as the first products of the Volkswagen Group's ambitious India 2.0 programme.

Volkswagen Taigun Anniversary Edition launched: Expert Review & Analysis

The Taigun is built on the "Indianized" MQB A0 IN platform, like the Kushaq, with which it was created and is produced, and it boasts up to 95% domestic components. The 115hp, 1.0-liter turbo-petrol engine from the Taigun series is available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The focus of this evaluation, however, is on the hotter "GT" varieties. The 150hp, 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine for the Taigun GTs is the only one offered, and it comes standard with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

It's fascinating to note how differently the GT manual and GT automatic are equipped. According to a Volkswagen representative, the automaker aims to make the GT manual "more accessible," but customers who prefer an automatic are typically willing to pay extra for the added convenience and features.

What are the new updates of Taigun Anniversary Edition?

The only three colours available for the Taigun First Anniversary Edition are Curcuma Yellow, Wild Cherry Red, and the newly introduced "Rising Blue" colour scheme. The SUV also has a "1st-anniversary" symbol that the brand has placed both inside and outside. The black C-pillar graphics, door edge guards, and black wing mirrors are further Anniversary Edition-specific additions. The Taigun First Anniversary Edition keeps its dual-tone roof, 17-inch alloy wheels, and lower-half chrome inserts on the front and rear bumpers. It also keeps its two-slat chrome grille up front.

What is VW Taigun like on the outside?

The Taigun isn't the largest midsize SUV available for purchase in India, to start with. The Taigun is a little bit shorter and narrower than a Hyundai Creta, so it lacks a little bit of the SUV-like butch road presence that many potential buyers might expect. Having said that, the Taigun is stylish, modern, and appealing in metal. With simple lines and a straightforward design language, the appearance is unmistakably Volkswagen. The elevated, squared-off bonnet immediately distinguishes the Taigun from the more opulent Tiguan, while the three-slat chrome grille with an enlarged VW badge mixes in with the huge headlamp clusters. Up front, there is a lot of chrome that, according to rumours, was added to suit Indian preferences. However, you'll find there's too much bling on the Taigun if you prefer your German cars plain.

The Taigun has a sharply defined shape, with the class-leading 2,651mm long wheelbase and low overhang stance being most noticeable in profile. Commendably, the only place where a Taigun and a Kushaq might be confused is at the sides. The two versions have a similar body covering and even share doors, mirrors, roof rails, shark-fin antennae, and roof rails. The Taigun GT automatic is distinguished from the GT manual by its larger, single-tone, 17-inch wheels with a diamond-cut design.

What is VW Taigun like on the inside?

The moment you shut the door, which closes with the reassuring thump we've come to associate with VW automobiles, the Taigun creates a good first impression. You'll be in a pretty contemporary Volkswagen interior inside. With a flawlessly integrated, high-set touchscreen and a great blend of materials, the dashboard is especially nice. The dash lacks soft-touch plastics, but faux carbon-fibre accents and a ceramic-looking panel on the front give the interior some personality. Interestingly, the gloss panel is also offered in red with some body colours; whether this is lively or excessive, it will undoubtedly cause debate.

The 8.0-inch coloured digital instrument cluster that comes with the GT auto option adds more colour to the interior. It's not a widescreen display like Audi's Virtual Cockpit, but it is appealing and easy to read. Only the central panel (out of the three) is changeable; the side screens are mockups. The GT manual version includes more straightforward analogue instruments and a more simplistic monochrome MID. Other noteworthy features include the extremely sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel and the upscale, simple-to-use touch-operable climate control panel.

Massive door bins, a sizable wireless charging station to hold a smartphone, cupholders, seatback pockets, and even the boot are roomier than what its 330 litres may imply. There are several storage options throughout the interior. If you require more luggage space, the rear seats may be split 60:40.

What equipments are available in Taigun?

It's impressive that all Taigun models come equipped with electronic stability control and other safety equipment including dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and reverse parking sensors. With Bluetooth Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Volkswagen's new 10-inch touchscreen is an easy to use and pleasant addition. Additionally, it includes pre-installed apps like Gaana that use the internet connection on your smartphone.

The GT manual additionally has a wireless charging pad, climate control, cruise control, 16-inch alloy wheels, and a rearview camera in addition to these features. With automatic LED headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, push-button start, an auto-dimming inside mirror, a digital instrument panel, a sunroof, and side and curtain airbags, the GT automatic goes a step further.

Strangely, the GT variants lack the ventilated front seats that are available on the non-GT variants. We've been advised that these will probably be on the equipment list later on.

Is VW Taigun worth buying?

Therefore, should you be interested in the Taigun? The Taigun is not a good choice if you desire a large, powerful SUV or frequently travel with all five seats occupied. However, the Taigun is a roomy 4-seater and it does have a stylish exterior and interior. Yes, it lacks some of the features of its Korean competitors and shows some evidence of cost-cutting, but on the bright side, it feels just as rugged as a German SUV should.

The Taigun's driving capabilities are where it really shines. With its powerful 1.5-litre engine, plush ride, and agile handling, this SUV is enjoyable to drive. The more diminutive Taigun 1.0 TSIs likewise guarantee good value for your money. The price range for the 1.0 variants is expected to be between Rs 10.5 and 14 lakh (ex-showroom), while the 1.5 MT will probably start at Rs 15.5 lakh and the top-of-the-line DSG models will cost Rs 18 lakh.

Only a thorough comparison with competitors will finally reveal where the Taigun slots in, but if you're looking for a reliable, upscale, and sporty midsize SUV, the Taigun might be the vehicle for you.
