Tata Motors has launched the Tata Nexon EV Max and this car seems like a very good option as compared to any of its rivals. That being said, the Max gets more powerful and has a larger battery pack which makes it good for longer routes as well.
Tata has been taking huge strides when it comes to the EV segment. And why not? I mean, they have almost captured the entire market in this specific segment and with the upcoming lineup of cars, it would not be wrong to say that Tata is owning this segment for now. The four-wheeler electric mobility segment has been given wings and Tata is looking to capitalize on that.
And therefore, Tata has introduced the new Nexon EV Max. With Tata Nexon EV being the best-seller in the EV segment, it seems to be a perfect option to revamp and work on the already successful name. And as we can guess, right from the name, Tata Nexon EV Max, it gets a larger battery and a more powerful motor, and added to that are a lot of other features which we will talk about moving forward.
This new Tata EV has been provided with a bigger 40.5kWh battery pack and the motor also is able to generate a maximum power of 140PS. The new Max has a range of around 125km. Well here are all the good and bad aspects of this SUV EV. Let’s see if this one is a better ride or the same package under a different name.
It’s not that Tata has just added the “MAX” for the gist of it. There are obviously some tweaks cosmetically as well. Although the face of the car is the same as its predecessor and I can even say that it is identical. But, the EV gets updated alloy wheels. You’ll find disc brakes at the rear wheels, which were not there in the standard Nexon EV. And again, there are no particular changes on the backside of the car.
You can also be able to differentiate between the Nexon EV Max and the standard Nexon EV because of its unique Teal Blue color. It is exclusive to the Tata Nexon EV Max.
Well, I for one can compromise on cosmetic changes but if there are updates to any car, I specifically feel that it should be superior to its predecessor. And that has been done with the EV Max as it becomes more powerful than before. There are also bigger battery packs and additional features. Although the weight of the car has increased by about 100kg due to all the extras in the EV Max.
Riding the Nexon EV Max is quite fun, just like other pure electric vehicles. But the improvements made in the car are easily noticeable while you drive it. The acceleration is a bit quicker than before due to the powerful electric motor and added new features like a three-level regeneration system which allows the driver to customize the best setting and enjoy the single-pedal driving.
The highest regeneration setting is Level-3 in the EV Max. The regeneration is very powerful and strong and that is the reason Tata has added features to make the brake lights glow when the car stays at level -3 setting and the driver lifts the foot from the accelerator.
There is another interesting feature, the auto hold. When this feature is activated, the Nexon Max automatically engages the brake and keeps the car from rolling backward or forward in traffic. But as soon as you will touch the accelerator the auto-hold deactivates. Another very interesting feature, if you don’t use the auto-hold in city-traffic is, is the crawl feature. The Nexon EV starts to move, as soon as you lift off the foot from the brake pedal in start-stop traffic. If you are driving this car on open roads, you can use the cruise control system. Most of the extra weight that this car has, is on the floor of the car which makes the center of gravity closer to the ground. This means there is much more stability and good cornering at high speeds.
The ground clearance has been reduced by 10mm due to the battery packs on the floors. But, you don’t need to overthink while taking it on a dirt road as well, it won’t touch the underbody.
As I told you previously as well, the new Tata Nexon Max offers a battery pack of 40.5kWh which is about 33 percent bigger than the 30kWh. There is a new charging setup as well. Nexon EV Max received a 3.3 kW AC charger that takes around 15 to 16 hours to charge the Nexon Max from zero to 100%. But there is an added option of a 7.2kW AC charger that costs an extra Rs. 50,000. This charger takes only 5-6 hours to juice up. Also, you can use 50kW fast chargers that are available in public places to recharge the battery pack fully within an hour.
Tata has added a more powerful electric motor mated with the battery pack. This electric motor is able to generate 143 PS of maximum power and a peak torque of 250Nm. The best part, this new EV can reach 100km/h within 9 seconds. Internally, there have been major changes in the cabin. This car gets a new cabin theme which is lighter in color. The Nexon EV Max has a long list of features intact with the addition of a new illuminated jewel-type gear knob, that looks great and it gets a colored display that changes color according to the mode. The new Tata EV also gets an electronic parking brake, wireless phone charger, air purifier, auto-hold, hill descent control, cruise control system, and upgraded ZConnect 2.0 connected technology with 48 features.
There is proper ventilation on the front seats which will help the drives on the hot and humid days. The seats get tri-arrow perforations. There would be a slight difference in the posture when you sit in the rear of the car and that’s because the floor has come up slightly to accommodate the larger battery pack. This though pushes the knees up and you might feel that the under-thigh support is not enough.
The new Nexon EV Max offers three modes – City, Eco, and Sport. Like the other Tata cars like the Harrier, the car announces the new mode loudly. The output also varies while you use these driving modes. In Sports Mode, the Nexon EV will utilize maximum power. And meanwhile, the Eco will have less power utilization.
You can go around 100km and still more than half of the battery would be there to use. And this is not a bad deal.Straight enough, Tata has done a tremendous job in keeping the range anxiety of the customers aside while they think about this vehicle. You can take this car on long-distance routes without thinking and worrying about the charging stations. This car is absolutely a bit more expensive than the standard Nexon EV, about INR 1.5 lakh dearer, but it still remains an affordable choice compared to its closest rival – the MG ZS EV.
The Nexon EV Max costs Rs 17.74 lakh for the entry-level variant and if I am not wrong, it does feel like a great value-for-money deal. We are hoping to see a lot of these on roads and that too pretty soon.
