Highlights
► BYD Atto 3 has been aggressively priced in India at Rs. 33.99 Lakh.
► BYD Atto 3 is built on BYD's new e-Platform 3.0.
► The Blade Cell technology has been used inside the BYD Atto 3, which is the best battery tech available in the world currently.
BYD, or Build Your Dreams, is not your typical Chinese EV manufacturer. It is a corporation that is technologically, financially, and intellectually invested in the EV cosmos, and it sits securely at cutting-edge electric car technology. It manufactures what is largely regarded as the world's safest and most technologically advanced lithium-ion battery, the Blade. This is no easy task. Even Tesla, which prides itself on its own battery technology, is expected to employ BYD's Blade cells in its Model Y, which is manufactured in Germany. It is also one of the world's largest producers of lithium-ion batteries. So BYD is certainly not a low-tech company.
In addition, the corporation is no stranger to India. For the past 15 years, the company has focused on mobile components, solar panels, battery energy storage, electric buses, vehicles, and forklifts, as well as chargers. BYD now has roughly 20 dealers in key Indian cities, and the Atto 3 is the company's second vehicle to be sold in India.
The Atto 3 is built on BYD's new e-Platform 3.0 as well. Apart from the Blade cell advantages, this has numerous other technical advantages. The platform, for example, receives an eight-in-one electric powertrain that incorporates the drive motor, inverter, transmission, onboard charger, battery management system, power distribution unit, and vehicle control unit.
The engine has a high efficiency of 97.5 percent, BYD's Operating System decouples and unifies the otherwise multi-layered hardware and software system for improved performance, and the 800V system now includes a power boost option. Furthermore, the blade cells are mounted in a honeycomb structure that strengthens the battery and serves as a structural part of the chassis.
According to ARAI, the Atto 3 features a 60.48kWh battery pack that provides a healthy driving range of 521km. The Atto 3 can charge from 0 to 80 percent in 50 minutes using an 80kW DC fast charger. BYD will provide customers with a 7kW AC home charger as well as a 3kW AC portable charging box for charging external electrical appliances for a limited time.
When it comes to lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) batteries, BYD is the global market leader. The Blade battery is its best LFP battery. This is due to the way it is built and the way the cells are piled together. LFP technology improves volumetric cell density by 50% and eliminates the need for a typical cooling system, saving space. The Blade battery is well-known for having passed the most stringent battery test in the EV market to date. One of them is the nail penetration test, which is performed by forcing a long nail straight through the battery - and in which the Blade battery stayed stable.
The Blade battery did not generate smoke or catch fire when a short circuit was simulated, and its surface temperature barely reached 60 degrees Celsius. It is nearly difficult for the battery to have thermal runaway or uncontrolled burning at this temperature. According to the company, a standard lithium-ion battery would have topped 500-degree Celsius under the same conditions, causing it to burn violently. Cars powered by the Blade battery should thus be much safer, even if the batteries are severely damaged. The Blade battery also passed additional harsh tests such as being burned, crushed, bent, and heated in a 300-degree Celsius furnace. The battery was almost 260 percent overcharged. There was no fire or explosion as a result of any of these tests.
The Atto 3 has a strong shape that lies between a sporty SUV and a crossover, according to first impressions. It's also clear that Chinese automobile designers have come a long way from the highly derivative designs of earlier vehicles. The Atto 3 has a distinct personality, beginning with a flat, athletic snout and a ribbon of chrome connecting the headlamps.
The blue parts in the lights are also attractive, and the faux fog-light section gives the nose some much-needed width and visual weight. BYD calls their design language 'Dragon Face 3.0' and yes, that nose does have a reptile appearance. It's not a large, square, and bluff SUV, that's for sure. The tight-fitting roofline and nicely executed muscular flanks complement the design nicely. Furthermore, the car's back end is nicely rounded off in a muscular manner with linked tail lights that look very appealing.
The company name Build Your Dreams is emblazoned in chrome beneath the light bar. This may not be to everyone's taste, but it gives the automobile a distinct personality that cannot be mistaken for anything else. A sporty spoiler is also added to the rear, and the 'C' pillar has an interesting metallic fish-scale-like effect. The alloys are also well chosen, and the unique five-spoke design works well.
While the Atto 3 appears small in person, it measures 4,455mm in length and has a 2,720mm wheelbase thanks to its compact and tight dimensions. This makes it larger than competitors such as the MG ZS EV (4,323 mm) and the Hyundai Kona (4,180mm).
When you open the door of the Atto 3, the first adjective that springs to mind is "funky." And it is very unique! Some of the more bizarre aspects are unlikely to pass muster with a German or Japanese design committee. They'd be far too bizarre. BYD, on the other hand, deserves to be congratulated for taking a risk. Or a few. The thing is, when the initial shock wears off, some of it works. The bass guitar strings on the door pads remain excessive, and the white soft-foam-like 'duvet' (for lack of a better phrase) that runs across the dash is needless and will be a nightmare to keep clean. The vents are reminiscent of the grille of a 1940 Plymouth radio.
Nonetheless, many parts operate properly. The wave across the dash is intriguing, the blued 'leather' looks and feels terrific, and the aviation throttle-like gear selector is amazing. Even the spaceship-like steering wheel and the weird door latches atop the LED-lined speakers work and look great. However, the black plastic buttons on the steering wheel and those surrounding the gear selector are poorly constructed, and the plastics lower down on the dash are not up to the same standards as the rest of the cabin.
The enormous, 12.8-inch touchscreen, on the other hand, spins at the press of a button, which is a fun party trick. However, it appears to be suspended in the middle of nowhere, and parts of the menus are directly lifted from Tesla. Still, it has some interesting characteristics. The built-in dash cam, for example, is a feature that all cars should have; it's a terrific addition, and the 360-degree camera is excellent and even provides a ghost picture of the car through which you can stare. There is no wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and the small screen above the steering wheel is inconvenient because you have to continuously glance at the small numbers and hunt for them.
The cabin's construction, on the other hand, is excellent. It is solidly screwed together, and the insides appear to be well-made. This is especially true of parts like the large center console and the dash's top. The huge sporty bucket seats feel a little enormous for the cabin's width, but they have a premium feel, are wide, support your thighs and back, and find a comfortable driving posture is simple. However, the middle back support should have been stronger, and the seat appears to be too narrow for some larger people.
The extended wheelbase also means there's plenty of space in the back. Because of the big sunroof, the cabin seems light and airy, and the leg and shoulder rooms are adequate. The flat floor contributes to the sense of space; after all, this is a born-electric platform. However, you are seated low, possibly due to the battery under the floor, which reduces your comfort. There are rear vents and USB ports, and getting in and out of the back is simple. The boot capacity of the Atto 3 is 440 liters, and the cube-like enclosure is quite practical. You only get a puncture repair kit and no spare, which is impractical in our circumstances.
The Atto 3 is also well-equipped. All-LED lighting, a powered tailgate, a wireless phone charger, powered front driver and passenger seats, and multi-colored ambient lighting are all standard. The screen includes a voice assistant and the Spotify app, while the Atto 3 is equipped with a 360-degree camera, ABS, ESC, traction control, hill descent control, and up to seven airbags, including a driver-side airbag. It also has advanced driver assistance technologies including automated emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and front and rear collision warning.
The BYD Atto 3 has a lot of advantages. It's easy to drive, pleasant to sit in, and has a cool-looking, unconventional cabin, a large, well-configured touchscreen, and a slew of safety and tech features. The Atto 3 boasts adequate performance, a comfortable ride, and loads of driver-assistance technology. Then it gets one of the best and safest batteries on the market, BYD's proprietary Blade, and a very robust 521km range; expect at least 400km in real life.
The Atto 3, on the other hand, costs Rs 33.9 lakh. Its competitors offer nearly the same amount of electric vehicles for significantly less, which may limit attractiveness. Still, if smooth, refined driving manners are what you're looking for, and you like the Atto 3's sense of individual style, it could be the EV for you. It isn't for everyone, but neither is standing out in a crowd, which BYD's Atto 3 will undoubtedly do.
