Transmission systems influence a vehicle's performance, driving dynamics, and fuel efficiency. When deciding between automatic and manual gearbox vehicles, it is critical to understand how each affects mileage.
Earlier Manual Transmission in cars used to offer better mileage compared to automatic. But after advancement in technology and more gears in the automatic transmission improved fuel efficiency better than the Manual. Generally automatic car variants cost more than the manual and the maintenance cost is high as well. So here in this guide we will understand about the transmission type and how it affects the fuel efficiency. On top of that we have added a real life mileage comparison of a car with different variants.
The driver can change gear ratios to maneuver the vehicle using a manual transmission. Higher gear ratios offer more acceleration and less torque, whereas lower gear ratios supply the much-needed torque and less acceleration. The terms "6-speed gearbox" and "5-speed gearbox" refer to these ratios, which are also known as "speeds." The car's engine may deliver power to the wheels at varying rates thanks to the gearbox or transmission.
To move the vehicle from one place to another, a driver must engage two physical components of the vehicle. These components, which cannot function independently and need the driver's input, include the clutch pedal and the gear shifter.
The friction clutch decouples the engine from the gearbox when the driver presses the clutch pedal. The engine and gearbox keep running when the clutch pedal is depressed, but they are not connected to each other. This makes it possible for the driver to change gears and extract the necessary energy to transfer power to the wheels.
When using an automated gearbox, the driver still has some control over the vehicle, although it is far less than when using a manual gearbox. This is because there are fewer mechanical components that need to be used.
There are no parts like the gear lever or clutch pedal. All the heavy work is done by the car when the driver engages the shifter to the "D" mode, which indicates the drive mode. The gearbox uses fluid pressure to shift gears automatically.
The planetary gear set, which generates various gear ratios to supply power to the wheels, is the primary component of the automatic gearbox. The automatic gearbox fluid applies the pressure needed to engage the clutch and gear ratios. It allows the car to go forward or backward by cooling and lubricating moving parts. The accelerator pedal is the only input required from the driver to move the car; the shift of gears occurs automatically.
Types of automatic transmissions include
Manual
Automatic
Automatic transmissions often add extra weight to a vehicle, reducing fuel economy compared to their manual counterparts.
Transmission Type | Mileage Efficiency (approx.) | Best Use Case |
---|---|---|
Manual Transmission | Better under skilled driving | Highways, cost-conscious buyers |
Torque Converter AT | Lower than manual | Comfort-focused urban driving |
CVT | Comparable to or better than MT | Smooth acceleration, urban driving |
DCT | Slightly less than MT | High-performance vehicles |
AMT | Comparable to MT | Cost-effective automation |
Now we will give a real life mileage comparison for Tata Nexon on different transmissions but first look at the ARAI claimed mileage for different combinations:
Transmission Type | Fuel Type | ARAI-Claimed Mileage (kmpl) |
---|---|---|
5-speed Manual | Petrol | 17.44 |
6-speed Manual | Petrol | 17.44 |
6-speed AMT | Petrol | 17.18 |
7-speed DCT | Petrol | 17.01 |
6-speed Manual | Diesel | 23.23 |
6-speed AMT | Diesel | 24.08 |
Here's a comparison of the real-life mileage for the Tata Nexon with manual and automatic transmissions:
Transmission Type | Fuel Type | Real-Life Mileage (kmpl) |
---|---|---|
Manual (5-speed) | Petrol | 15.0 |
Manual (6-speed) | Petrol | 15.4 |
Automatic (6-speed AMT) | Petrol | 17.18 |
Manual (5-speed) | Diesel | 21.0 |
Automatic (6-speed AMT) | Diesel | 22.0 |
The manual variants with a 5-speed gearbox deliver around 15 kmpl, while the 6-speed manual gearbox versions return about 15.4 kmpl. The automatic variants with a 6-speed AMT gearbox offer around 17.18 kmpl.
