The Indian government is swiftly advancing its electric vehicle (EV) agenda by forming a dedicated task force in line with the Viksit Bharat vision. With a focus on stakeholder engagement and infrastructure development, the task force aims to draft a comprehensive roadmap for EV adoption. Various agencies are collaborating to address critical aspects such as charging infrastructure, battery swapping, and workforce development, driving India towards a sustainable mobility future.
Key Highlights:
EV Adoption Task Force in India: Aiming to accelerate India’s EV drive, the Indian government has started constituting a dedicated task force. This initiative aligns with the Viksit Bharat vision of the Indian government. The new task force will be responsible for drafting a roadmap to boost EV drive in India. According to a report, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has sent a letter to OEMs to initiate the procedure. Once the automakers start the process, the MHI will finalise the establishment of the dedicated task force with the help of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and other responsible agencies.
In a letter, the Ministry of Heavy Industries mentioned that the task force would be responsible for having discussions with the stakeholders through formal meetings and workshops. These workshops will be centred on important topics related to EV adoption and infrastructure development. According to a report, the respective authorities have requested various agencies to give their inputs on 11 major topics that will play a crucial role in drafting an action plan for EV adoption in India. The agencies involved in establishing this dedicated task force have begun approaching OEMs to take initiatives aligning with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.

In 2024 so far, the Indian EV industry has registered significant growth with the total number of EV registrations crossing 15 lakh units. It is a huge rise over the previous year's registration of 10 lakh units. These registrations have contributed to increasing the EV ratio to 6.3 per cent of total vehicles in India.
Achieving great success due to the FAME scheme, the government continued to take initiatives in the same direction with the introduction of programs like the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024. The EPMS scheme has a budget allocation of Rs. 500 Crore which is more than enough to create a buzz of electric vehicles in India.
There will be different agencies involved in the overall functioning of the task force. Below you can check all the responsible agencies involved in this initiative.
Gessellschaft Fur Internationale Trade and FICCI
The Gesellschaft Fur Internationale Trade and FICCI will be mainly responsible for developing EV charging infrastructure throughout the country. On the other hand, the Retail Motor Industry Organisation will focus on three-wheelers and two-wheelers.
IBSA, ICCT, WRI and USAID
The Indian Battery Swapping Association. This agency will be responsible for taking initiatives on EV battery swapping. The International Council on Clean Transportation will be responsible for managing the matters related to electric trucks. World Bank is also involved in the initiative and it will handle matters related to electric buses. In addition to this, the World Resources Institute/FICCI will oversee the matters related to electric four-wheelers. Lastly, the US Agency of International Development (USAID) will be given tasks such as powering devices, electronics and motors.
IESA, ACC and Primus Partners
The Indian Energy Storage Alliance will manage stuff related to advanced chemistry cells. The Primus Partners will be responsible for exploring rear earth materials which play a major role in the development of electric motors. All the workforce and skills-related issues will be addressed by the Energy and Resources Institute which will ultimately prove beneficial for the rapidly growing EV sector.
The Indian government's initiative to establish a dedicated task force for accelerating the EV drive is commendable and aligns well with the Viksit Bharat vision. With significant growth in EV registrations and the introduction of schemes like EPMS, the momentum for electric vehicles in India is promising. Collaborative efforts involving various agencies indicate a concerted push towards sustainable transportation, fostering a brighter, cleaner future.
